PeteS is in the House
#1
I started using "PeteS in CA" in Internet discussion sites in 1997 or 1998. My first news & politics site was Capitol Hill Blue Reader Rant, in 1998. I've also posted in a few sites as "SVPete" and "Traddles".

I've been married since late in Carter's MalAdministration, have three adult munchkins, one of whom brought a spouse into our family. Born in California's Central Valley, my Dad being a farmer. Other than 6 years for college and career start in the Phoenix, AZ metro area I've lived in CA my whole life, more than 4 decades of it here in Silicon Valley.

I was raised in a theologically conservative Lutheran church and have pretty much always been conservative. Among the Ten Commandments, the one forbidding theft intrinsically recognizes the validity and morality of private property. So Socialism is excluded. Given Communism's history (and Marx's approval) of killing people for their economic status and/or political views, the commandment forbidding murder means Communism and Marxist Socialism is out; Hitler's and other non-Marxist types of socialism are also out. It wasn't until after high school that I thought it through, but I believe that the commandment against murder forbids abortion unless the mother's life is in jeopardy. The commandment against adultery (and the specifics in Leviticus and elsewhere in the Pentateuch) cannot be reconciled with the 60s and 70s "Sexual Revolution" nor with same-sex "marriage".

I'm not a hard-nosed person, but I have definite beliefs from which many of my political views flow. I'm actually a fairly easy-going person. I could have said more - I'm well into my 7th decade of life - but the above suffices for now.

That's a great summary, I should work on something similar since it takes me 1000 words just to say hello!

Some RO-related stuff. In the background, as early as mid 2015 there were indications I saw and tried to call to the owner's attention that RO's security had a hole somewhere. The hole seemed innocuous, but a security hole is not good, obviously. I am far from a SW guru but mysterious things were cropping up that obviously indicated a problem. John Galt was basically an absentee owner who largely relied on RO's Mods to keep things running smoothly and on background SW to alert him to hacking. JG didn't respond to my PMs or posts in the moderators' forum. There literally were 9-12 month gaps in which he did not log in.

When RO finally was hacked, JG's SW alerted him, and he stopped the hack and shut down RO. This was the weekend before Election Day 2016. JG is not lazy, he just had/has a lot of life going on. That is why he was an absentee owner, and why, after cleaning up the site, he did not have the confidence in the thoroughness of his work to re-open RO. Fast-forward ~3 months and he'd sold the site and re-opened it. Then the new owner went with that godawful new SW.

On my personal side of things I'd given up on RO. So it was a bit of a surprise when it reopened. Between its diminished state and the idiosyncratic forum SW, I PMed the new owner my resignation as Moderator. He asked me to give it a try for a couple of weeks. I gave it a couple of months, but stopped logging in some time in October, 2017. I tried another forum for a couple of years, left it (mostly), and have been on my current forum home a bit over a year.

Thank you for the background about the owners neglect.

I keep wondering why JG didn't try to sell or give away the forum? since he made clear he was not excited with it, after all he was capable of running it. The Original Owner asked ME through the PM system around 10 years ago, to take over the forum from him, I declined the offer, which I now regret.

If he was content to being an absente owner, he SHOULD have picked someone to be the Site administrator to handle it for him, then he wouldn't have to deal with it much.

If he had asked for help or relief, I would have been glad to answer, but he never asked, did he?

RO's Mods were decent enough as users, but none of us had the techno-chops to do the database side or forum SW side Administrative stuff. That was why a certain POed now-former member's claim that I had hacked his PMs was intrinsically absurd. Only someone able to access the DB and access data directly might be able to do that. I'm a technoid life-form, but in analog hardware, not computer SW. So either the POed now-former member's "trap" was something easily guessed or he or a buddy had absent-mindedly posted it publicly.

If @Calypso Jones sees this, that is the background to my posting as "Traddles". I wanted to post on TPF without ______ getting POed.

I could read the PM's, but that requires going into the cPANEL, then look in myADMIN area (Need to log in) then look for the messages, not going to do that.
